Annotation #2

Annotation#2

Summary:

Visual text and writing are similar way to describe what they means and what they want to say. Basically, we can learn from the picture to get the meaning of the messages. Or, we can learn from the text to understand what they are trying to say. People are better in describing from the written text. However, visual text would be more concrete then the written text.

Quotes:
"Meanings are negotiated between signmakers and their interaction with other texts and conversations" p(85)

  •  People can express their feeling by the text, signs or talking.

"Language is composed of many different social languages" p(85)

  • This quote is saying that everyone has different styles to interact with other people. For example, people who are immigrants are different with native people by their accents, culture, beliefs and so on.

" Further, it acts on the viewer to the degree in which the viewer is familiar with the context of the text." p(85)

  •  Alberts is saying that people are better describing of the text but not from the art.
Question:

 - What is the difference between "visual discourse" and "visual text"?

Annotation#1

Annotation #1

Summary:
Freire said that reading and writing is really important because it can change the way you think and how you see the world. Basically, reading makes you more mature. World to word!! If you read more, you can see the world better. He also talked about the experiences and personal connections with how he became to like to read and how important of reading and writing. Teacher is also part of to shape who you are. However, it is not all depends on the teacher but its the students have to create their own reading and writing style.

Quotes:

"The actual act of reading literary text is seen as part of a wider process of human development and growth based on understanding both one's experience and the social world." p(5)

  •     This quote is saying that text can make you develop your growth, how you see the world.

"As I perceived and understood it better by reading it, my terrors diminished" p(7)

  • He is talking about how he scared of darkness and ghost but once he challenge to face his fear and after that his fear was gone. I think he is trying to say like do not afraid to read and write because you think you are not good at it or some reason. But to challenge and face your fear, once you used to with reading, you will not be afraid.

" The student did not have to memorize the description mechanically, but rather learn its underlying significance"p(8)

  • Learning is not just about memorizing but to know the basic significance  and critical understanding..
Questions:

-What is the purpose to read "The Importance of the Act of Reading"?
- What message Freire trying to give to us?

How I annotate the articles

How I annotate the articles

I like to take notes by writing down my opinions about the articles. So, I printed out the articles and skim the pages first before I annotate that. Then, I started to read and highlight the main keys and the sentences that I think it is important. I wrote some responses next to the line that I highlighted. Also, I researched the definitions of new vocabularies. Another thing is asking questions that I am not sure about. After I finished reading the articles, I wrote down short summary what the articles about. For Albers, it is better to see the main ideas because it is already shown it to us. Yes, I did additional notes next to the margin that I think some of the main keys are important too.

Why I Choose This Book

Why I Choose This Book

The strategies I always do is looking at the length of the book. I do not like to read really long books so I skim through the book. Also, I look at the word size because if the words are too small, it is more likely harder and complex. Choosing the novel to read, I always read summary from the back of the book and inside cover. It is because I want to know this book is interesting to me or not. Researching the author history is the strategies which new for me.
My first choice is The Hundred Se certs of Sense because when I read the summary, she talks about the culture differences between China and America. Also, she talks about the Chinese girl who believes that she can see ghosts. That seems interesting to me because I like horror and mystery story. Being as an Asian girl, maybe there has some culture, beliefs that I and the author have same perceptive because the author is Chinese American.
My second choice is Persepolis because it is a comics so I can visualize the image by looking at the pictures. The story is interesting to me because it is about the war and how she has been through those scary moments. It also talks about the gender like women can not show the skin and also has to wear the veil all the times.

Strategies for Pre-Reading

Strategies for Pre-Reading

The first thing I would do is skim the whole text from the article. Then, I will read through it with annotation. I think the annotation is really important because we can write down our opinions about how we think about the text. Also, I feel like we are talking with the text by annotating. We can also put the question mark next to the words that we are not surely clear. For me, I always put question mark next to the words that I do not understand. So that I can understand the meaning of the words and fully understand about the text that I am reading. Asking questions back is another strategies by identifying the concepts. Underline/ Highlight the main ideas.

Syllabus Response

                                              " Everything is a Text"

My first thought about "Everything is a Text" was that we need to read a lot of articles and annotate. It is because a text which means no pictures but all words and sentences. However, when I review the syllabus, it is also including our experiences and analyze or compare with the texts. The first semester, we will be reflecting what we have done compare with the text. The second semester, we will be practicing the critical thinking and analyze the text.
The policies are fair and the descriptions of essays are well explained. So we can prepared ahead of time and think about those.
What I am looking for is that I want to be a better writer throughout this year.
