Language is the basic foundation of society.

  • African American- the way they talk- Loud
  • Oreo
  • Between real English and Broken English ( isn't - ain't)
  • segregation
  • School's culture
  • Better to learn with family dialect.
  • Influenced by the environment and family
  • School shouldn't judge someone who speak broken English because it basically tell the student " You don't fit here"

Halloween  Halloween  Halloween ...
What is that? I have never heard it before but now I do. It is like people are wearing weird or scary costume with makeup on. What does it mean to me? Actually, Halloween doesn't relate to me at all because this is not my religious. I grew up in the other country which do not have Halloween but similar culture relate with ghosts or spirits. What I do for the event? Our family pray or give them food for the spirits who do not have relative of them. But at the end, we just eat it back. Sounds crazy!! Just like the first time I heard about Halloween. However, in here kids are so happy about it because they get to choose what they like to wear and get a lot of candy....

The recent struggle I am facing right now is thinking about changing my major. I do not know any other major that is providing in SF State. So, I went to several places for advising. And I could not have chance to meet with any adviser yet. Also,I feel like they do not want to help students at all and they do not know what they are talking about. What I mean is like they don't know their jobs. Sometimes, I think of like " What the heck they are doing at school, just sitting in front of computers, chatting with co workers and going on lunch break when its time and going home when 5 and so on". There are many students out here struggling in choosing classes and what classes should they choose for pre re and so on. All they said like follow the instruction book that they gave us in school orientation. I feel like they should not do like that and they should of care more about the students. We are college students and most of the students are 18 already but as a freshmen in new big school like SF State, the adviser and staff in here should know how to guide freshmen to become successful in college. In my Burmese language, we called those people like " ko chi ma sar tat luu tway" That means like they don't know what they are doing. If I were like those people, I am willing to help those students to guide what they need.

The whole article is focusing on talking about the difficulties of reading and writing and how we become overcome barrier and practice to become an expert There are four ways to identity and practice your difficulties. The first thing we need to do is to find what is our weakness and what do we need to improve our writing. Then, think about the area of our difficulties like what is happening in this article and try to think what the author most talking about. After that, go back to the passage that we do not understand and re-read it again. Then, think about how we relate with this passage or relate with something that we can think about.
To write an informal essay, it should be less argument instead elaborate with the texts and develop with it.

The Pedagogy Behind This Writing

The study mainly focusing on the reflection of our difficulties based on reading, thinking, writing. To help student's difficulties; teachers are helping student to think what they want to say based on the passages and expand ideas for them. Critical thinking is to develop the difficulties that we have and keep working on those.
The purpose of this passage is to help students to express their own ideas and belief; not just only rely on the other people's opinion and think they will be always right.

I like the article about Gloria Anzaldua. It is because she talked about how she struggling when talking with wild tongue which is mixed Mexican and English. People required to use Standard English at work and how they have different dialect for each continents. Not just Spanish, there are a lot more. She has to use different dialect when she talks to different people. People tried to be racism based on their accent. However, that shows as an identity and we should not judge it based on that. The facts she explained it's all related with immigrants or bilingual because those people are facing with two different culture.
"Deep in our hearts we believe that being Mexican has nothing to do with which country one lives in."(42)
This is so true because everyone has different languages background and based on that we all have different belief so even we are not living in our home country, we always should remember where we come from.

Reading Strategies

  • summarize main point in  margin
  • re-read certain parts
  • skip difficult part
  • translated in margin

"A language which they can connect their identity to, one capable of communicating the realities and values true to themselves." (35-36)
Language represents identity, culture and belief.

"And because we internalize how our language has been used against us by the dominant culture, we use our language differences against each other." (38)

"There are more subtle ways that we internalize identification, especially in the forms of images and emotions." (42)
We always have our belief based on where we come from.

"Deep in our hearts we believe that being Mexican has nothing to do with which country one lives in." (42)
No matter where we live, we should remember what our identities are.

One day the inner struggle will cease and a true integration take place." (44)
Based on what she is struggling about how the language should be Standard English however she still keeps her wild tongue to show what is her identity.

"People make theyselevues targets for racism if and when they dont wirte and speak like he do. But dont nobody’s language, dialect, or style make them “vulnerable to prejudice.” It’sATTITUDES. It be the way folks with some power perceive other people’s language." (110)
That's why different culture of people try to say or not agree with other culture and start to judge other people.

"Standard Language ideology is the belief that there is one set of dominant language rules that stem from a single dominant discourse(like standard English) that all writers and speakers of English must conform to in order to communicate effectively." (111)
Everyone needs to use standard language to communicate effectively at work. You can use only dominate language at home. (dominant language ideology )

" And that's my exact arguement, that we all should know everybody's dialect, at least as many as we can, and be open to the mix of them in oral and written communication."(111)
WE should understand and be opened about all types of languages but not judged other people based on the dialect and culture.

"Instead of prescribing how folks should write or speak, I say we teach language descriptively. This mean we should, for instance, teach how language functions within and from various cultural perspectives." (112)
Like combine languages together and be opened with every types of languages.

"But we should be mo flexible, mo acceptin of language diversity, language expansion, and creative language usage from ourselves and from others both in formal and informal settings. Why? Cuz nobody can or gone really master all the rules of any language or dialect."
Everyone has their flaws and mistakes. it is like we don't blame at the mistakes but learn from the mistakes and fix it. So no one is perfect to professional in Languages.

"Code meshing blend dialects, international languages, local idioms, chat-room

lingo, and the rhetorical styles of various ethnic and cultural groups in both formal and informal speech acts."

Essay 2 Reflection

                                                               Essay 2 Reflection
-What was your favorite part of Essay 2?
-What was challenging?
-Did the assignment and activities change your “ways of seeing” the world, or your community or surroundings?  How?
-Ultimately, would you recommend this assignment?  Why or why not?
My favorite part of Essay 2 is find the background history of the artifact I chose which was "Fisherman's Wharf". Through the artifact, I learned a lot of new things about Fisherman's Wharf which are historical background, seafood, tourists. Some of them made me surprising which was the base community of Italian culture. Moreover, there was challenging thing which the interpersonal connection with the sign I chose. It is because I did not have that much culture to related to the sign. However, I can still find what can I related with the sign because it reminds of my work and people around there.
Changing the ways of seeing the world and reflecting back ourselves are the main things in this essay. However, this assignment change my ways of seeing the world because I got a chance to thinking back to my reality or experiences with the visual artifact which are common and which are not. One thing what I learned from this assignment was that even little things surround us, we just did not realize those but everything has their own story background and sometimes it could be related with us. Therefore, I would recommend this assignment because it is fun to think about what things around us can related to us which we never thought about before. So we can reflect back to ourselves and  think about how we can relate to them.

Annotation: The Hundred Secret Senses (Chapter 7-12)

Also, I kinda felt like I am lost and I did not know how to continue to write. Since, this essay is like narrative but I feel like my essay is not like that. Another thing is my grammar because I did not care about it and I just wrote down what I want to write so I think it is gonna be really bad. So that, I want my teammates to fix my grammar and sentence structures. Also, what should I add more for my essay.

Hello Professor Dan!

Time passed  by really quick and it is already two months since the school starts. The first week of my semester was so stressful and tired because I did not know what to do and not used to it. Especially, for the Statistics class, I had no idea about what it was about. It was because I did not learn anything about that in High School so it was all new for me. But later, when I started to know about the materials, then I feel better and not stressful as before. I am taking four classes which are English 104/105, Communication class, Statistics and Chinese.  For my other classes, it is okay. Not too hard and not too easy. But for Chinese class, since the units are 5 credit so I had to give more time to prepare for the class. Tomorrow, I have my very first exam for Statistics class, I feel so scared and nervous because the exam worth 20% of my grade so if I did not do good on that, I will get a C even I submitted all my homework on time. And the next class, I have Chinese exam and I think I am ready for it. So after Chinese class,  I need to study for the tomorrow exam and get a good grade. After taking Statistics exam, I need to write the draft for this class. I have not started it yet but I think the idea draft will help me a lot when I write it.

Essay #2: Idea Draft

Essay #2 Idea Draft* tourists culture
1. Describe your selection process. What motivated you to analyze the text you chose? Why is it important to you? Why should your reader care about this analysis; what might you teach them?
I chose the fishermen's wharf sign in the most attractive place for the tourists. The reason I chose this place because every time when I go to school or come back home, I saw that and it caught me attention because the sign is big and place around there it is a lot of seafood place so make me try seafood there. Also, I think that they are trying to give tourists attention about the place and San Francisco.
2. Describe the Text itself.
I think it is taken in the summer around the evening time because it is beautiful, sunny and nice. I believe the symbol of crab will grab a lot of attention because it is located in the most busiest area and it's huge.
3. Describe the Contexts.
The location is between Jefferson Street and Taylor Street. Near this sign, there are a lot of souvenir shops, restaurants and San Francisco Dungeon. Since there are a lot of fun things to do for tourists. Of course, the food, parking fee, souvenir gifts are really expensive however a lot of tourists are still buying it because their culture or beliefs are that gifts or souvenir might save their memories or moments the time they spent in San Francisco. What I think about the community in the San Francisco is specialize just for the tourists. It is because I learned something from my work which also located in the Fishermen's Wharf. That is in that area, there are two different taxes which are 8.5% for the federal SF and another 2.5% for the Fishermen's Wharf.
4. Analyze the authors/ creators of the visual text
So How is that Fishermen's Wharf become popular in San Francisco? The history behind that is migrants Italian came to the city of the bay and started to invest his businesses in fishing and became successful. Therefore, we can see a lot of Italian seafood restaurants around the Fishermen's Wharf. Another interesting thing about San Francisco Fishermen's Wharf is clam chowder. It is originated from the Europe and it made with whatever seafood. However, as the clam chowder passed all over the world and by the time, it got here to San Francisco, we recreated the original recipe which is eating with sourdoughs. It is how the San Francisco Fishermen's Wharf famous for.
5. Describe what was your reaction to the text? Logic?
This is a reason why a lot of tourists came to my work place and asked me " Do you know any restaurant has a good clam chowder?" I'm not from San Francisco. However, since I will be living here, I should know this because this is my new home. So I can answer the questions what they asked. The fishermen's wharf sign gives a lot of people think that here in SF has really good seafood place and in my opinion, I think it is true because it is small community and there was history about Italian fishermen what made this community popular and famous to the tourists.

PW: How was your field trip (10/03/17)

How was your "field trip"?

First, I did not know what to choose for the visual image and it has to be a place in the community. The reason I chose this image because every time when I see this fishermen wharf sign, it reminds me of my first real job. Because every time when I go to work or going back home, I always passed and saw that. The symbol is crab because maybe it is near ocean so they want to tell us like we have really good seafood here.Like "you can't miss this". Also, there is a place where a lot of tourists go there and explore about new things. You can see there are a lot of people walking around in a nice sunny day.

Annotation: The Hundred Secret Senses
Our group think that Kwan will able to see her dead father in the house. But it is not true. In Chapter 1, it is mostly about the relationship between Kwan and Olivia. Olivia's mom is really reliable on Kwan so that she does not need to do anything. Kwan loves to tell about her yin eyes story and how she can see the ghosts. Since Olivia is still young, she told back to her mom what Kwan said. Therefore, Olivia's mom and her new boyfriend thought that Kwan is mentally ill and sent to the mental hospital. Kwan got a treatment like electric shock. After Olivia found out about that, she won't tell anything about Kwan to her mom because she felt guilt about what she had done to Kwan.
"Why does she say over and over again that even if we were not sisters, she would feel this way? Libby-ah, she tells me, I never leave you" p(26)
In Chapter 2, Kwan talked about how she met with Miss Banner in Changmian. They lived in the Ghost merchant which is like haunted house. By that time, the foreigner persuades Chinese men to participate in believing in Great Peace (God Worshipper). Later, Chinese people are sick of it because they get no longer rice and everyone feels selfish.
"But when there is peace, no one wants to be the same. The rich no longer share. The less rich envy and steal." p(35)
In Chapter 3 and 4, Kwan keeps telling the story about Miss Banner and how they built up the community called Jesus Worshippers. Miss Banner's husband who is a traitor called General Cape.

In Chapter 5 and 6, it is about the relationship between Olivia and her lover Simon. Olivia crush on Simon however he has a girlfriend called Elza. Later, Simon found out Elza pregnant and she died, he decided to stay with Olivia. But Olivia is blind because of love, she understands Simon as much as she can and that's how they build up their relationship.
" I never thought that he too would fill my life with ghosts."p(82)
