Tinberg and Berger

Berger is talking about like the pictures, images are giving the message like a text. Every advertisement, magazines are trying to others envy about their messages.   They both have similar purpose to see as a viewer. Tinberg is talking about the culture. It can be defined text from the culture by looking at it. From there, we can identify what people think based on their culture then we put into the text. Some advertisement do not sell the products but selling the ideas.

Annotation: Ways of Seeing

Annotation: Ways of Seeing
Publicity is like a social media where people can show off of what they have. Publicity, painting, advertisements have same main point to give a message to viewers Publicity can make people feel insufficient, greedy and anxiety.  It is because they are not loving as themselves and afraid other people see them faceless instead of lovable. Nowadays, a lot of teenagers feel bullied, depressed and suicide because of publicity. People are going to blind because of publicity and it makes them feel they are not good enough and always envy of other people what they have. Publicity is only focused on the future outcome which make people feel better. It can make a lot of profit/advantages to the producer, consumer and market. Like an advertisement, magazines can make a lot of money for the buyers and market but somehow buyer do not know how effect can make because of the message they are sending to. In these days, when people have money, they can do whatever they want which make them look powerful. If some people do not have money, they will feel hopeless because of the publicity. Therefore, publicity is dangerous because it is changing people's belief of what they are right to wrong side.
"Publicity persuades us of such a transformation by showing us people who have apparently been transformed and are, as a result, enviable." p(5)
" Publicity is always about the future buyer. If offers him an image of himself made glamorous by the product or opportunity it is trying to sell."p(6)
"Publicity is about social relations, not objects. Its promise is not of pleasure, but of happiness: happiness as judged from the outside by others. The happiness of being envied is glamour." p(6)
"One could put this another way; the publicity image steals her love of herself as she is and offers it back to her for the price of the product."p(8)
Publicity is the culture of the consumer society. it propagates through images that society's belief in itself."p(12)
"The purpose of publicity is to make the spectator marginally dissatisfied with his present way of life." p(16)
"The power to spend money is the power to live." p(17)
Publicity is the life of this culture- in so far as without publicity capitalism could not survive- and at the same time publicity is its dream."p(28)
"Today in the developed countries it is being achieved by imposing a false standard of what is and what is not desirable." p(28)

PW: Ethno-graphy (9/26/2017)

Pw: Ethno-graphy

Ethnography is a study of cultures from different countries and people. It is really important to consider when describing culture because we can tell people's background like who they are from there. For example, the way they talk, dress, act and eat we can tell where they are from. It is because we know based on their appearances. Appearances can sometimes show what their culture is. The most important one is language. Other could be their clothing, characteristics, behavior and for a girl (make up) what they wear. Also, different cultures can affect the way we think and believe that some other different cultures do not agree or funny to them.

Annotation: Ethnography in the Writing Classroom

Annotation: Ethnography in the Writing Classroom
"Their job is inscribe and read the language of a ritual as well as of a speech situation, that is, to scan the full range of a culture's texts."p(80)
Ethnography is a study of the different people's cultures and analyze based on the observation about how people interact and why their dialect or culture represent about them. For example, nowadays we can easily observe in school or class because they have different ethnicity of background and culture of students.
"The focus of ethnography in the writing classroom ought to be "language". p(79)
The example in the article, Poussaint is not used to call him as a "boy" because he is a doctor so he prefers "sir" or "Doc". However, the police did not know and call him carelessly even though he did not intend to mean anything. In the other hands, Poussaint feels so irritated about how he was being called. Therefore, people are acting and feeling based on what other people said and the way they act. Dialect is important and complex because different culture has different dialect. So that we need to know or analyze the differences. Language that we express, sometimes other people harm because of our dialect.
"It is important to emphasize that in "doing ethnography" students like Veronica are actively and genuinely doing research and that they are connected to the research they do."p(82)
To study of ethnography, we need to interview someone about something we can relate or connect with. Interviewing people is really important in this study because we want to know how people think based on their culture beliefs, environment that they grew up, social and so on.

Pre Write: 09/21/17

Pre Write: 09/21/17

I think that the proofreading is responsible to the reader because the writer can not see their mistakes so the reader should point out to that.  Writer cannot see those mistakes because they wrote the paper so they might think that it sounded right but other people like reader can see the mistakes. Proofreading is like the final stage of editing so look carefully on the grammar, writing structures and styles. Like looking at the text alone and finding the mistakes. In my essay 1, after the first draft, I only did proofreading. I did not change my focus and I just only looked the text alone and edited it.

Annotation for Blog #5: From Inquiry on Visual Analysis

Annotation for Blog #5: From Inquiry on Visual Analysis

" Our main point, though, is that visual images make claims on us as viewers in much the same ways as any written text does." p(240)
" Everywhere we are confronted by visual images that aim to persuade us." p(237)

The article is trying to say like even the visual images give same messages as the written text. So, the visual images and written text are trying to persuade the reader. There is an advertisement as an example show that what is the message and how the location can affect on the viewer.  It is saying that location can also affect to the viewer of how they get the message and think about the poster. There are steps to examine the visual images. First, think about what is the first thing you saw or notice when you look at it.  Second, think about why you notice it and make your attention. Third, think about pathos, ethos and logos.  Pathos is how the visual images make you feel? Logos is what is the message of the visual text? Ethos is like what the author is aiming for?

Reading as a Writer

When we are reading the book or articles, we need to annotate which means we are analyzing of the writer's main point. From there, finding the main point and making arguments as a feedback to see how well we are understanding of the writer's text. So every time when we read, first identify what the author is talking about. Second, identify the main point of what the author's statement. Third, identify the evidence that author provide.

Annotation for Blog #4 From Inquiry on Revision vs Editing

Annotation for Blog #4 From Inquiry on Revision vs Editing

In this article, it talks about the differences between revising and editing. Revising means that when the writer needs to come out with new ideas when he or she is missing evidences or not directly answering the prompt. Editing means like fixing grammar, changing the sentences structures or reword the sentences to sound more make sense but the ideas should be remain. Editing should be done for the final draft because if we are still struggling with making the new ideas, and we did editing first then the essay should not be strengthen. Revising focus on questioning the writer 's purpose and what can they do better. Editing focus on the text alone and style. The article is basically showing you how to revise it and edit it step by step using the composition pyramid.
The pyramid has three different parts in editing process. First, find out what the writer's thesis like what they are trying to say. Second, find out what are the evidences to support writer's thesis. Like the evidences is support to the thesis or not. Also, the evidence is relevant or reliable to the topic. Lastly, in drafting the writer will focus on the structure of the writing style and make the last product.

"The best writing will happen in the context of real readers' responding to your drafts." p(274)

" A peer group can also ask questions to help a writer set new goals" p(279)

-Those two quotes are saying that to become a well done product, we need peers to show our products and see what we are missing and what should we add based on peers' suggestions and comments.

Essay Reflection

Essay Reflection

In this past 4 weeks, we had assignments to read and based on that then we wrote the essays.  In this essay, I just wrote based on my experiences so I did not really follow the rules (TEA). It is because after my first draft, I feel like  the way I wrote for my essay seems smooth because I wrote like from my childhood through teenagers experiences. I did use some starting sentences to explain the quote based on reading from They say, I say. It is helpful because I did not know how to explain it first. I feel like this essay I can reflect my own experiences and connect with author. Also, Professor Dan knows more about me where I come from so it is good thing.

So as a definition of academic writing for my essay 1, I feel like I still have a lot more to accomplish a goal. It is because I feel like my essay 1 is simple. I mean the structure of writing is simple, implicit and repetitive vocabularies  So my goal for the next essay is following the TEA and using more academic vocabularies to stronger my essay.

Pre Write: Draft (09/13/2017)

How do I feel about my draft?
I think my draft should be okay for today because it's just only looking for the ideas and responses to the prompt. But I feel like I still need to fix my grammar and the structure of the paragraphs for my final draft. It's because my essay is spreading out the ideas all over so I need to rearrange in order and develop the good thesis. The last thing is my conclusion. I still need to think how to conclude and connect back with my body paragraphs or maybe talk more about future experiences.

Book Clubs Prediction: The House of Serect Senses

The House of Secret Senses

The introduction for the book is like a girl named Kwan Li who has a yin eyes which can see spirits and ghosts. She is Chinese born but immigrant to San Francisco because of her father last wish. Her father was killed by lung diseases and has a family in California. He has two sons and one daughter called Olivia Laguni. So Olivia and Kwan is like half-sister. Olivia is really worried and scared that Kwan will come and stay here with them. It is because she thinks that Kwan will take all the love or attentions from the family. By the time, when Kwan moves here she is eighteen and Olivia is just only the age of six. However, Kwan is really good sister. She can takes care of everything for household. Olivia thinks that Kwan is annoying and stupid because she asks everything what she see that she does not know. Therefore, Kwan learns English from Olivia and eventually Olivia learns Chinese from Kwan. Later, Kwan talks about the spirits and how terrible things happened in China before.

My prediction is like since Kwan has a yin eyes, she might be seen the dead of their father. Or maybe the story about how she becomes to see the sprits and since when. Also, the title is like " The Hundred of Secret Sense" Kwan might has superstition power from yin eyes and help the ghost to show the right way to heaven. From there, Olivia becomes to know or learn about the Chinese culture from Kwan.

PW: Idea Draft (9/7/2017)

PW: Idea Draft

My intention is writing the essay about like how obstacles I had faced while I were learning to read or write. I want to show the experiences of past reading as my examples. And how I think reading the world before I am here and after. Then prediction about how is my future reading and writing will be.

Idea Draft

Idea Draft

1. Significant Experiences
   - 9th grade in High School, first book called " Flight".
   - 3rd grade in elementary school, learning about grammar.
   - Outside Reading called " The Memory of Light"
   - I can read but trouble understanding the main ideas or what the author is trying to say.
   -  Symbolism

2.    How the significant experiences shaped how I see the world?
After reading about " The Memory of Light", I can understand more about people who are in depression or having a hard time. But in this book, the girl who has depression but she has a courage to step into the world. So what I can relate to the book is that even I think I am not good enough in writing or reading but I do not walk away from my fear. But have more courage to familiar with my weakness. Still cannot read the world yet.

3. Visual text is really helpful to me. It is better to learn in visualizing because pictures also show the same meaning with the text but it has pictures .

4. The past reading experiences are really important because when we were little, we started to learn from alphabets-words and words- sentences. As the long time, we added up what we learned and shaped who we are right now.

They Say, I Say! Annotation for Chapter 7 "So What? Who Cares?"

Chapter 7

Main Points:

  • Always necessarily to answer "so what?" and "who cares?"
  • Answering "so what?" and "who cares?" makes the reader interesting.
  • If not, readers will lose interest of reading
  • Readers should know what the author makes the statement and why it is important.
  • "Who cares" : comparing what you want to say and what others say.
  • "So What" : Make your argument stronger and more interesting.
Quotes:
"Regardless of how interesting a topic may be to you as a writer, readers always need to know what is at stake in a text and why they should care" p(92)
The authors point is that even though the problem is really serious or important to you, you need to express why the problem is also important to the readers and why they should concern.
"By suggesting the real- world applications of your claims, the templates not only demonstrate that others care about your claims but also tell your readers why they should care."p(99)
This quote states that using templates for answering that your claims are important to others but also why your claims are matter to others.

"Ultimately, such templates help you create a dramatic tension or clash of views in your writing that readers will feel invested in and want to see resolved."p(96)
According to this quote, template makes writers to become better describing in their claims. Also, it makes the reader wants to get interesting and active with claims.

Question:

- When do we answer "so what" and "who care"?

They Say, I Say! Annotation for Chapter 3 "The Art of Quoting"

Chapter 3: The Art of Quoting

Main Points:

  • Quotations: the evidence to prove the thesis statement.
  • Finding Quotations should be wisely because it has to be connect and support with the thesis statement.
  • Thesis Statement and Quotation are two different parts."one coming after the other"p(44)
  • "Dangling Quotation"- states the quote but do not support or apply with your thesis.
  • "Quotation Sandwiches"- Statement = Bread, Explanation= Meat.
  • Claim- Quote- Explanation
  • Using Templates are easier to describe the meaning of the quotes.
Quotes:
"The point we want to emphasize is that quoting what "they say" must always be connected with what you say." p(43)
Graff and Birkensrein state that when the writers try to explain the quotes, it has to connect with him or her claims.
"In fact, sometimes quotations that were initially relevant to your argument, or to a key point in it, become less so as your text changes during the process of writing and revising." p(44)
In the other hands, the authors say that the quotes will lead to not connecting with your claim when you revising or changing the writing styles.
"When offering such explanations, it is important to use language that accurately reflects the sprints of the quoted passage." p(47)
In other words, the authors' point that we need to explain thoroughly about the meaning of the quotes and how the quotes is related with your claim.

Questions:

-How do we know the quote is the perfect quotation for the statement?

They Say, I Say! Annotation for Introduction

Introduction

Summary:
The idea of this book is to become better writers and thinkers. Before becoming an academic writer, the first thing to do is knowing the basic moves. Once we understand and become an expert in writing styles, we will not have a lot of difficulties. The meaning of "They Say... I Say" is that when I(the writer) states the statement, They(the viewer or reader) response based on the statement back to writers. Everyone has different opinions, but when you write the essay, you need to persuade the reader about what you believe. And the reader should respond either agree or disagree and why. Then, the writers gather all the responses and putting into words. By using the example/templates that shown in the book make a better writer and more creative. However, some students do not think that it is creative, believed that making their own will be even better.

Quotes:
"For this reason, one of the main pieces of advice in this book is to write the voices of others into your text"p(3)
This quote means that the writers is rewording the reader's opinion into a text.
"It follows, then, as the figure on the next suggests, that your own argument-the thesis or "I say" moment of your text- should always be a response to the arguments of others." p(4)
This quote means that thesis statement should always be the response of the reader. So that reader can response with either agree or disagree. If not, it does not make sense.
"In other words, the templates offered here are learning tools to get you started, not structures set in stone." p(11)
This quote means that the templates are just a phrase and we can write or fill in the blanks creatively and we can change the styles of the templates however we want. The templates are the tools for practice. We do not have to follow the patterns every single time.

Question:

-How does the templates make more creative in writing?
